Optional Practical Training (OPT) is a temporary work authorization that allows F1 international students to gain practical experience in their field of study. This guide explains eligibility, application timing, employment rules, and responsibilities throughout the OPT period.
Application Deadline
Missing the 60-day post-completion filing window permanently eliminates OPT eligibility. Plan your timeline well in advance.
Key Points
Apply Early
File your OPT application no more than 90 days before program completion and no later than 60 days after.
DSO Recommendation Required
Your Designated School Official must recommend OPT and issue an updated I-20 before you file with USCIS.
Work Must Relate to Major
OPT employment must be directly related to your degree program and field of study.
Track Unemployment Days
You may accrue a maximum of 90 days of unemployment during standard 12-month OPT.
Detailed Guidance
What Is OPT?
OPT is temporary employment authorization granted to F1 students for practical training directly related to their major area of study. Students may be authorized up to 12 months of OPT employment per higher degree level.
Who Is Eligible for OPT?
Students must have been in valid F1 status for at least one full academic year, be enrolled full-time, and be pursuing a degree at a SEVP-certified school. Students cannot have previously used 12 months of full-time CPT at the same degree level.
Pre-Completion vs Post-Completion OPT
Pre-completion OPT is part-time during school and full-time during official breaks. Post-completion OPT begins after all degree requirements are met and offers 12 months of full-time work authorization.
OPT Application Timeline
Request a DSO recommendation 90–120 days before program completion. USCIS accepts OPT applications no earlier than 90 days before completion and no later than 60 days after completion.
DSO Recommendation and I-20 Timing
Your DSO will issue an updated I-20 with an OPT recommendation endorsement. This I-20 must be dated within 30 days of when you file your OPT application with USCIS.
USCIS Filing Window
File Form I-765 with USCIS along with your OPT-recommended I-20, passport copy, I-94, two passport photos, and the required filing fee.
EAD Card and Work Start Date
USCIS processing typically takes 3–5 months. Your Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) will show a start and end date. You may not begin working until the EAD start date.
Unemployment Days and Reporting Rules
Students on standard OPT may accrue up to 90 days of unemployment. Report all employment changes, address updates, and employer information to your DSO within 10 days.
Maintaining F1 Status During OPT
Update your address in SEVIS within 10 days of any move. Report employment start and end dates and confirm all work relates to your degree field.
Common OPT Mistakes to Avoid
Avoid late applications, working before EAD start date, exceeding unemployment limits, failing to report changes, and accepting employment unrelated to your degree.
